Oh. My. Goodness. I used to think 40 was so OLD...if you were 40 you were just steps away from fake teeth and a nursing home. Now it seems that my husband will soon be 40. And since John happens to be a triplet, his brothers Jim and Jerry share his birthday! Anyone who'd care to can leave a comment here and I'll pass them on to John or Jim or Jerry or whoever you'd like to wish Happy Birthday.
And, our sweet, sweet niece Selina will be 5 on October 9 also! To wish her a Happy Birthday, visit Lee and Brooke's blog and leave a comment there.
And while you're at it, our nephew Chet turned 5 on September 29. Visit Jerry and Sabrina's blog, leave a comment for Chet, and make his day.
One of these days I'll try to put up some old pictures of the triplets, because some of them are pretty funny. For now, I need to go stir my Oven Roasted Red Potatoes with Organic Homegrown Dill, Sea Salt, and Freshly Ground Black Pepper.
Why is it that I feel like I'm talking to myself?
Helllllooooo out there!

Supper tonight: gourmet breakfast
It seems that the new fashion trend in cooking these days is to put every single ingredient of the dish in the title. This makes it sound gourmet and fancy. Frankly, it drives me nuts. As I was making supper tonight for the kidlets, I realized that instead of saying we're having oatmeal, potatoes, and bacon, I could tell them we're having:
Raisin-studded Oatmeal with Brown Sugar and a Touch of Cinnamon (no milk though--read 2 posts after this for more about that)
Oven Roasted Red Potatoes with Organic Homegrown Dried Dill, Sea Salt, and Freshly Ground Black Pepper
All Natural, No Nitrates added, Bacon cut from a pigs belly
Okay, maybe we could leave the last five words out. That could be disgusting to someone.
Now, doesn't that sound fancy? Where're my candles? And whatever happened to Tuna Surprise?

Happy Anniversary!
Today is Dad and Mom's 37th anniversary. I didn't send a card (what else is new?!) but nevertheless, I'm thinking about you! May you have many many more wonderful years together. Love you lots, see you this weekend.
This and that
I haven't been so good about taking pictures lately. Maybe the shorter days are having an adverse effect on me? But I can just TELL you what we've been up to.
Hmmm, let's see. Rebecca has been really good these past few days. Dare I say "delightful?" I think second grade is just what she needed. We haven't seen near as many fits, and I think she actually listens and possibly even absorbs what I tell her. We still have a small problem with paying attention to the task at hand. She needs to be reminded several times to brush her teeth or get dressed or concentrate on her homework. That gets pretty frustrating for me! It never fails: she'll go into the bathroom to brush her teeth and immediately forget what she's in there for because she's so busy making faces at herself in the mirror or trying a new trick on the stool or watching the water squirt when she closes her hand over the stream...you name it. Anything but what she should be doing!
Joel is a little hunter. He'll see a squirrel run up a tree in our yard, tell me "just a minute, I see a squirrel," and he grabs his (toy) rifle and is out the door. Soon afterwards we hear a thunderous "BANG!! BANG!! BANG!!!" Since his gun doesn't make noise anymore he has to scream it himself. Then he comes in, takes off his shoes, sets his gun down and gets back to playing with the Lincoln Logs.
Clayton...hmmm. Clayton. Yesterday I had my hair up in two buns (towards the back of my head...I did NOT look like Princess Leia or whatever her name is from Star Wars.) We weren't going anywhere so I decided to do something different instead of the same old hairdo. I probably won't be doing it again, due to some comments I got from my family. First was Clayton's: I was busy doing laundry or whatever it is mommy's do all day and I had just walked into the boys' bedroom when I heard him call "Mom! Mommy!" I asked what was wrong and he said "Your hair is UGLY! You look like a girl." The last sentence was said with a touch of disgust.
Then Rebecca came home, took a look at my hair and laughed. I didn't take that as a good sign. When John came home he didn't say anything and I thought that possibly he hadn't even noticed. HA! I said, "What do you think of my hair?" and immediately he said "Pippy Shortstocking." He noticed. O-kay....
On to other news. Hmmm, I'm having a hard time coming up with anything here. I vacuumed today. My throat hurts and I've gone through dozens of Kleenix...Tucker ran away again today but came back for a snack and now he's in the slammer. Serves him right, dumb dog. The other night he left and didn't come back until 4:00 in the morning! I was secretly hoping that a neighbor had poisoned him. Maybe someday he'll be a really good dog, but for now he's just trouble. (Disclaimer: I am not a violent person, and I do not hate animals. I might even cry if Tucker did die...but when it's the middle of the night and our dog is off who-knows-where terrorizing the neighborhood, I can think some pretty dark thoughts.)
I'd like to bake, but two things prevent me from doing that today: #1, my nose is constantly dripping and I think that's a nuisance, not to mention disgusting. Who'd want to eat something I baked right now?? And washing my hands every other minute gets annoying. #2, Joel more than likely couldn't eat what I make, so I'd have to make something else for him. That thought alone usually squashes any desire I have to bake.
We have no milk in the house, unless you count a box of Nonfat Dried Milk in the pantry cupboard that probably expired 2 years ago. Why don't I throw it away? I think I have some of those Depression-era genes in me that say "I might need that someday." Clayton keeps asking for "taught-et milk" and the poor kid can't have any unless I give in and make it from powder. We have no peanut butter in the house. Tucker got the last of it last night. Wow, whatever will we do without milk and peanut butter? I think I'll just go curl up on the couch under a blanket, with a pillow on my head. And I won't turn away anyone who'd like to come over and massage my aching shoulders, spoon-feed me chicken noodle soup (homemade please), and read to me. Even mommies need to be babied sometimes, right?!
Wow, how did I get to that last paragraph? Just give me a couple days and I'll be like new.
